Frictional Characteristics of Oceanic Transform Faults: Progressive Deformation and Alteration Controls Seismic Style

چکیده

Oceanic transform faults are inferred to be weak relative surrounding oceanic crust and primarily slip aseismically. Neither their weakness nor tendency creep well-explained. We test the effects of fault-rock evolution on fault frictional strength stability using direct-shear experiments (at room temperature, 10 MPa normal stress, fluid-saturated conditions) dolerite from East Pacific Rise natural rocks exhumed Southern Troodos Transform, Cyprus. Dolerites cemented breccias frictionally strong (? = 0.52–0.85) velocity-weakening (strength decreases with increasing velocity, characteristic earthquakes). In contrast, matrix-rich chlorite-bearing gouges 0.25–0.48) velocity-strengthening (characteristic stable creep). This transition implies that seismic behavior is controlled by degree damage alteration, such earthquakes can nucleate within relatively intact crust, whereas segments increased chlorite content tend

Coupled seismic slip on adjacent oceanic transform faults

[1] In a four and a half hour period, more than 60 events in an earthquake swarm on the western boundary of the Easter microplate were detected by an array of ocean bottom seismometers. The larger events of the swarm were strikeslip earthquakes located on two transform faults separated by about 25 km. Slip on the faults was closely coupled, with activity alternating back and forth randomly betw...

Evidence for weak oceanic transform faults

[1] We present the results of a series of 3-D boundary element calculations to investigate the effects of oceanic transform faults on stress state and fault development at adjacent mid-ocean ridge spreading centers. We find that the time-averaged strength of transform faults is low, and that on time scales longer than a typical earthquake cycle transform faults behave as zones of significant we...

Detection of power oscillation and simultaneous faults using Clark transform

Distance relays are widely used to protect transmission lines. Sometimes, in these lines due to the occurrence of the oscillation of the power, the impedance calculated in the distance relay enters into its functional zones and leads to the cutting off of the lines. This issue can cause global power outages. Accordingly, in this paper, a Clark-based method for detecting the oscillation of power...

Seismic tomography and deformation modeling of the junction of the San Andreas and Calaveras faults

Local earthquake P trave!time data is inverted to obtain a three-dimensional tomographic image of the region centered on the junction of the San Andreas and Calaveras faults. The resulting velocity model is then used to relocate more than 17,000 earthquakes and to produce a model of fault structure in the region. These faults erve as the basis for modeling the topography using elastic dislocati...
